5th Grade learns many valuable skills with SAE World in Motion Project
Recently Mrs. Ware's 5th grade science class participated in a World in Motion Project sponsored by SAE International and Janesville Acoustics. SAE International's A World In Motion® (AWIM) is a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program that brings science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to life in the classroom. The A World In Motion program builds bridges between corporations and classrooms by giving teachers, volunteers, and students the opportunity to work together and learn from each other.
Students made balloon-powered toy car that met specific performance criteria like; travels far, carries weight, or goes fast. Jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design were the core scientific concepts students explored in this challenge. In the JetToy Challenge, a fictitious toy company called EarthToy Designs presented the challenge in the form of a letter. The company wanted students to provide a variety of interesting designs for a new line of balloon-powered vehicles made from inexpensive, common materials that would appeal to other children. Working in design teams, students built and tested model JetToys using different nozzles, and collected and analyzed data to understand the effect of nozzle size on the performance of the toys. They created an original design and tested it, then gave a formal presentation of their final JetToy design.
Not only did the students learn academic concepts but also life concepts as well. Many students admitted to working in teams meant you had to work together, accept someone else's ideas, cooperate, take turns, and listen to each other to get the best car.

4th grade classes complete Science experiments
Real application is needed for real world skills. The students in Mrs. Careless’ and Mr. Notestine’s 4th grade classes completed experiments on weight, capacity, and length measurements as part of their recent math unit. Students had to predict, and test their predictions on the weight and length of classroom objects, and capacity of different sized containers. Students also created “Gallon Guys” to help them remember how many cups, pints, and quarts all make up a gallon.

God, Flag and Country Winners
Do you break out in a cold sweat, endure sleepless nights or develop a stomachache when asked to give a public presentation? You (and 85% of other adults) may have a fear of public speaking! Students at Norwalk Catholic Elementary are learning to overcome these fears at an early age.
Some of the students at Norwalk Catholic Elementary are getting early experience in public speaking through a local program sponsored by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #711. This program is known as the God, Flag and Country Speech Contest. The purpose of this program is to instill in young people a deeper understanding of God, of the history and importance of the American Flag and an appreciation of their country, the United States of America. The program was developed to expand the awareness of their heritage and to make that heritage more meaningful to them. Participation in this competition allows each student to practice their writing skills and to practice speaking in front of a panel of judges as well as a larger audience.
Students write a first draft of their speech beginning with some of their individual experiences or family memories. These speeches are improved through peer editing, grammar and vocabulary study, and group discussion. The students memorize their speeches and practice in front of an adult mentor. Advice is given on gesturing, voice inflection, articulation, pausing and posture. Many of the students go on line to view videos of winning speeches given in previous years by other contestants. The final practice is given in front of a group of adults at the school and final suggestions are given for improvement.
Four students in grades 4 through 6 participated in this competition on February 25. Tyler Cunnigham placed 1st in the 12-13 year old category. In the 10-11 year old category. Sara Scavuzzo placed 1st , Madelyn Hipp placed 2nd and Grace Gillen placed 3rd. Congratulations to these young people for participating in this extra curricular activity!

Teachers switch grade levels during Catholic Schools Week
In the elementary, teachers taught a lesson to a different grade level than they were accustomed to. This idea was brought to Elementary Principal Mrs. French by the students. Mrs. French asked the faculty about the idea and they embraced it with enthusiasm. The students at all levels had fun learning from a "different teacher" and the teachers not only learned about a different garde level, but a little bit about their own grade as well.
